Calgary athlete hopes for gold at Special Olympics Canada Summer Games

The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games begin Tuesday in Nova Scotia, with the opening ceremonies.

A Calgary athlete is competing for the first time, and is hoping for gold.

Michaela “Mick” Wasyliw, 23, is playing basketball for Team Alberta.

“Every time I step in the floor, and play a game, I feel like I’m at home,” she said.

Michaela’s coach, Bill Leesman, said seeing athletes like Mick grow is incredibly fulfilling.

“A lot of them aren’t given the opportunity to participate in school and club sports and to see them work hard and compete and prove to themselves that they are able to do just that — it’s highly rewarding,” he said.

Kia Canada and their dealers in every province are raising $150,000 in support of the games and their athletes.
