Travel: Rustic charm and varied terrain in the Cypress Hills

You don’t have to go west of Calgary to find great hiking opportunities in the wilderness.

Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is the highest point in Canada between the Rockies and Labrador, and straddles two provinces.

Travel Writer Jody Robbins says the park, along the southern boundary of Alberta and Saskatchewan, has a wide variety of terrain; from forest, to wetlands, to hills, to grassland.

“In summer you can kayak and canoe. Rentals can be found on Elkwater Lake, plus you can bring your gas-powered motorboat there,” said Robbins.

“You can fish for Yellow Perch and Pike. Both are naturally occurring populations. ”

“They have a frisbee golf course, a complementary 18-hole mini-golf course and tons of mountain-biking and hiking trails.”

Accommodation is very affordable. Relax in a rustic cabin or pull up your RV.

Robbins says make sure to stop in at Camp Cookhouse and General Store, right next to the visitor centre, where they use old-world techniques and local produce.
