Travel: Keeping the Stampede feeling alive

The Calgary Stampede has come to an end, but you can still get that cowboy feeling close to the city.

Travel Writer Jody Robbins said there are a couple of options for an authentic, cattle ranch experience not far from Calgary.

Rocking R Guest Ranch is just outside Chestermere,” she said.

“It’s a bed and breakfast with four person cabins. You get soaker tubs, full kitchens, an outdoor hot tub. They even can give you a four course menu with Alberta Beef, but what’s really great is they have 16 Quarter Horses, many of them have a Stampede connection.”

Or you can head to the Badlands and Bar Diamond Guest Ranch.

“There’s several cabins you can stay in,” Robbins said. “One is a century old homesteading cabin. Very sweet, very large, very low doors because people were shorter back then. But what’ interesting about Bar Diamond, in addition to the horseback riding is archeologist believe this exact spot is one of the largest spiritual sites in North America.”

Up to 10,000 indigenous people are believed to have gathered there, and several hundred teepee rings and two ancient medicine wheels have been found.
