Chestermere student awarded “Lemonade Day Youth Entrepeneur of the Year”

Eight-year-old Anaya Kassam was all smiles Monday inside Chestermere City Hall and it wasn’t just because her lemonade was so sweet.

The grade 2 student at Prairie Winds School was awarded the Lemonade Day Youth Entrepreneur of the Year as part of the city’s third annual Lemonade Day.

It’s organized by the city and the Chestermere Chamber of Commerce to teach young people business skills.

Kassam chose to place her stand in front of the Dollarama in hopes of attracting a lot of retail traffic.

The idea seemed to work with the judges who gave her top marks in three different categories; Business Results, Goals and Share Your Story.

The young business tycoon exceeded her profit goal by 11.5%. After paying her expenses, she was able to save 50% of her profit and donated 34% to the Aga Khan Foundation Canada – World Partnership Walk.

She’ll now represent Chestermere as she is entered into a grand prize draw with winners from across North America for a trip to a major theme park.

According to Chestermere officials, 171 students entered the local contest.
