Fine handed out to Nexen Energy

Nearly three years to the day of a major pipeline leak in northern Alberta, Nexen Energy has been fined a total of $750,000.

The company plead guilty in court to both a provincial charge and federal charge in the July 2015 spill that leaked about 5 million litres of emulsion into the environment.

The Alberta Energy Regulator says the spill was one of the largest in Alberta history, adding the pipeline responsible, at their long lake facility, will remain suspended until Nexen, which is owned by a Chinese company, can operate it safely.

$460,000 of the fine has been levied by the provincial government, while the other $290,000 was for the federal charge the company plead guilty too.
