‘Stronger’ Harvie Passage is now open.

Calgary’s new Harvie Passage has officially opened boasting a stronger and more flood resistant design.

It also includes a lookout point and a walkway along the river.

The first Harvie Passage was built in 2012 to replace the old weir that was a deadly hazard to paddlers.
It didn’t last long, being seriously damaged in the 2013 flood.

Now Alberta Environment and Parks Minister Shannon Phillips says the new Harvey Passage is stronger than the first one.
“These new structures will make this site more resilient to any future flooding events.” Phillips states, “Its been a long time coming.”

The new passage again divides the Bow River Channel into two passages for both more and less experienced paddlers.
Calgary Fire Department’s Pete Steenaerts says people still need to safety in mind.
“Where there’s water there’s risk.” Steenaerts explains, “They need to make sure that no one on the rivers is consuming alcohol, drugs, anything like that.”

Repairs cost about $8-million and came from the Federal Disaster Recovery Program
