Fire rips through Calgary home as its occupants vacation

A family will return from vacation to try to rebuild and salvage what is left of its home after a fire gutted it Thursday morning.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to the home in the SW community of Glamorgan around 3:30 Thursday a.m., the caller told 911 dispatch that they did not believe anyone was home at the time.

District Fire Chief Linley Biblow said that with that information they immediately checked the house.

“Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack to confirm reports of nobody home, so we do not have injuries but as you can see there is extensive damage to this dwelling,” Biblow said.

The fire caused significant interior destruction, with the main floor showing nothing but charred remains.

Much of the siding of the house has melted off, while the roof is slightly caving in.

Biblow said the damage was contained to the one home.

“Fire crews were successful in protecting the neighbouring houses.”

Neighbours were evacuated due to the smoke but have since been allowed back in their homes.

An investigation is underway as to what caused the blaze.
