Children show off steers at the Stampede

On Sunday, kids from across Western Canada and the US will be showing steers in the annual Calgary Stampede Steer Classic in the Nutrien Western Events Centre.

Lance Leachman, the judge of the event, believes raising a steer can lead to a lot of opportunities later in life. He says the skills learned in the process are invaluable.

The farmer from Maidstone, Saskatchewan says kids put a lot of work into their animals over the course of the year.

“The amount of hard work and dedication and skill that these kids have dedicated really to one animal that they’re going to have to show throughout the year is pretty amazing,” Leachman explained, “and to think of dollars and cents that the parent contributed in terms of their time, allowing the kids to travel.”

Leachman says the competitor’s family quite often enjoys the fact they can do it together, allowing the parents to pass skills down to their children.

He is encouraging people to come down, see the young steer raisers that have a bright future ahead of them.
