Calgary office of geospatial company assists in Thai cave rescue

Data provided by the Calgary office of a geospatial company has been very helpful in the cave rescue in Thailand.

Chairman and CEO of Intermap Technologies Patrick Blott said they have sensors and data sets that can see things the eyes can’t, so it helps divers navigate the area.

“Knowing how the water flows and knowing where the likely entry points are and where the exit points are, all of that is really critical when you’re making decisions on the ground as to sort of how to allocate your resources and how to do that really quickly so that you’re not wasting time,” he said.

The company is using its recently released NEXTMap One 1-m resolution elevation data to render 3D maps of the cave.

Blott said they have made a lot of progress since they began but it’s come at a cost.

“They lost a navy seal diver which is tragic and there is still a lot of work to do, but we’re in a much better place then we were a week ago so that’s good news,” he said.

He said they will continue to provide data along with plan and risk management.

Intermap Technologies is a company that provides geospatial solutions and has offices in Calgary, Denver, Prague and Jakarta.
