Three hockey players burned by campfire making progress in Alberta hospital

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The general manager of a Western Hockey League team in Alberta says a player who has been in an induced coma since he was seriously burned by a campfire is making progress.

Peter Anholt with the Lethbridge Hurricanes says Ryan Vandervlis has burns on the front of his body.

He says the team’s 20-year-old centre remains in the coma in hospital, but has been taken off a dialysis machine for kidney issues.

Two friends — also hockey players — received upper body burns from the fire, but are expected to make a full recovery.

Anholt says the three were among a group of 10 young men who had gathered at a home as part of a pre-wedding celebration.

He says the three were sitting on the same bench in front of the fire when an accelerant was used on some wet wood.
