A Calgary man who created a protest camp outside the courthouse downtown is working to find a permanent space to run programs for the community and those living on the streets.
A pair of teepees and a tent were set up for demonstrations following a not guilty verdict in the trial of a man accused of killing Tina Fontaine, an indigenous teen from Winnipeg.
Garret Smith said the camp became a place for healing and gathering and it offered some solace for the homeless.
“There’s a lot of Indigenous people here in the city that can benefit from something like this you know, more so than I can,” he said.
Next Tuesday, the camp marks 100 days at the site with an event that features drumming, traditional dance and ceremonies.
