Travel: Spectacular summer views from the top of the mountain

Ski hills west of Calgary don’t shut down for long after the snow season ends.

There’s plenty of activity over the summer’s months too.

Travel Writer Jody Robbins says the towns of Banff and Lake Louise can get very crowded this time of year, so head up the hills.

The Via Ferrata at Mt. Norquay opened June 9.

“You climb up the mountain using these metal rungs. It’s totally a rush,” said Robbins.

“They’ve got some really great suspended bridges. They have many routes but just opened up two routes last summer, a five-hour skyline route and a six-hour summiteer route.”

Sunshine Village opens June 29.

“They have the gondola running Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday but the Standish Chairlift runs every day, and what great about it, is its gondola hiking to Sunshine Meadows, which Lonely Planet rated as Canada’s best hikes. ”

You can also get a glimpse of the damage done by the Verdant Creek Wildfire that came dangerously close to Sunshine Village.

At the Lake Louise ski resort, there are some fantastic dining options.

“I recommend the Whitehorn Bistro and Kuma Yama,” said Robbins.

“They’re both really great restaurants. Plus The Smokehouse on the Bear’s Den patio is also open.”
