Highland Park Development could be scrapped due to drainage issues

A 2100-unit mixed-use residential development on the old Highland Park golf course is once again being pushed back.

A groundwater study demonstrates the approved plans could cause excess flooding in the Confederation Creek catchments area.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi noted area residents were vocal about the drainage issues prior to city approval for the project in March 2017 but the development site was still given a green light.

“It’s a pretty big deal for drainage through a bunch of North Calgary,” Nenshi said.

“So, I’m not very happy that we took the process in this direction. We should have done this work (the study) prior to approving the land use plan for that community.”

Nenshi said next steps include making sure drainage and flood protection is in place, and that whatever happens on the land benefits the community of Highland Park.

The president of Vancouver-based Maple Projects Inc., the company responsible for the development, says recommendations from the study would force the company to scrap the project, and that the city and taxpayers would need to buy the land back at an additional cost.
