Police warn Calgarians about international student fraud

Calgary police are warning the city’s international students about a scam where fraudsters try to milk money out of their families back home.

Police say two cases emerged in Calgary where scammers posing as police told students to go hide out in a hotel and get rid of all communication devices, or they may face deportation.

At the same time, they contacted family back in China claiming their child had been kidnapped and would be harmed if no ransom was paid.

Officers were able to find the victims quickly after being contacted by Chinese officials.

They are asking anyone who gets calls threatening deportation to contact police, or their embassy directly to verify the threats.
