Travel: Head for the hills this long weekend

Some will be packing up and heading out of Alberta this May long weekend, but for those sticking close to home, there’s plenty to do to celebrate the end of winter.

Calgary Travel Writer Jody Robbins says at Sunshine Village, they end the ski season in style with the Slush Cup.

“It’s actually its 90th year,” said Robbins. “What started out as a staff party has evolved into this great extravaganza where people dress up, put on their skis and snowboards and then book-it down the hill into a big slushy pool of water.”

The fun gets going on the afternoon of the holiday Monday, May 21.

Down in Fernie, people will be taking to the trails around town.

“They have an event called the Stag Leap Trail Running Weekend. They’ve got a ton of group trail rides going on, taking place all throughout the town and on Saturday, they even have a film festival going on, dedicated to trail running,” Robbins said.

If your pace is a bit slower, and you can’t get out of town for the long weekend, Waterton Lakes National Park might be an option from May 25 to June 3, for Taste of Waterton.

“You definitely want to get to Waterton before those summer crowds hit,” said Robbins.

“They have a pie cruise, and that takes you on Upper Waterton Lakes, where you get to sample load of delicious, fabulous pies.”
