UCP may talk about abortions at policy convention

Whether to cover the cost of abortions could be debated this weekend at the founding policy convention of Alberta’s Opposition United Conservatives.

Party leader Jason Kenney says the topic may not make it to the floor given a full agenda for the meeting.

He says debate, even on contentious issues, is a healthy byproduct of an open party.

The United Conservatives will meet in Red Deer, Alta., to hammer out rules to govern their new party as well as the foundations for their policy platform.

One proposal calls for a review of what are currently considered medically necessary procedures and whether any should be removed from public funding.

Anti-abortion groups and Alberta Health Minister Sarah Hoffman say that would be a way to defund abortion.

Hoffman is criticizing Kenney and his caucus for being OK with talking about abortion-related issues at their convention, but walking out last month on debate of a bill to protect staff and patients from harassment outside abortion clinics.
