One child dead, 14 others sent to hospital from Stoney Nakoda First Nation

One child is dead, while 10 other children and four young adults have been hospitalized after being found in medical distress on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

EMS were called to a home on the national west of Calgary around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday and a four-month-old baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics said the patients were suffering from “influenza like symptoms.”

RCMP have now called in their Major Crimes Unit to investigate.

“The investigation is very preliminary right now. Everybody wants to know what has taken place, why this happened and we don’t know yet, we’re looking into that,” said Corporal Curtis Peters.

“We don’t know if this is a criminal investigation necessarily or if it’s medical, but we’re certainly open to all the possibilities. And that’s why we’ve asked for assistance from the RCMP Major Crimes Unit and our investigators are still at the scene working to figure out what took place.”

All of the victims came from a family residence and all of the patients are believed to be related.

“Anytime you have an investigation that involves kids those are the ones that are the hardest but it also means a lot too so there is a real pressure on investigators to make sure they’re thorough,” said Peters.

Mounties have been called in from as far away as Red Deer to assist.

Victims Services is also tending to the family to help them deal with this crisis as best they can.

660 NEWS did reach out to Stoney Nakoda for comment but officials were busy dealing with the emergency on the reserve.

Mounties are hoping to have some sort of update on the case in the coming days.
