Committee calls for better accessible taxi services

A city committee is calling on City Council to create a fund to help boost accessible taxi service.
A report shows the city has 189 accessible taxi licenses, but 26 have been returned with the drivers saying the costs are too high to keep operating.
Harold Crittenden requires an accessible vehicle to get around, and told the committee Wednesday he actually missed a friend’s memorial after calling for a cab that never showed up.
“It was very sad that I wasn’t able to be there,” he lamented. “His family was there, he was one of my closest friends and I was unable to depend upon a taxi service (to get me there).”
Crittenden told CityNews he believes every cab should be accessible.
While the committee didn’t go that far, it did say something has to be done, and recommended many options be explored, including a central dispatch for accessible cabs.
