Calgary to host 2019 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games

The countdown is on for the 2019 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games, which will be held in Calgary next February.

Organizing Committee Co-Chair Karen Saunders said their goal for these games is to have a lasting impression on the city.

“(To) make this the most memorable sporting event for the 800 plus athletes that will be here,” she said.

“(And) two — to leave Calgary with the knowledge of what the Special Olympics is about, (and) how the programs that we offer on a daily basis can truly change the lives of those with an intellectual disability.”

Around 800 athletes between the ages of 10 and 60 from 23 communities across Alberta and the Northwest Territories will compete in eight different sports.

The theme of the games will be strength, sport and spirit.
