Crews battle two blazes in northwest

The Calgary Fire Department is crediting working smoke alarms with helping them quickly knock down a pair of fires in the northwest and prevent injuries.

The first happened in the community of Panorama Hills around 8 p.m. Thursday, and was contained to the room it started in.

The second was in the community of Ranchlands around 2:30 a.m., and did a little more damage according to Battalion Chief Al Magwood.

“There was some exterior damage and it also got a little bit into the house or the other way: it went from the house onto the deck, we’re not sure exactly yet,” he said.

He says nobody was hurt in either fire as active smoke alarms alerted the residents to get out of their burning homes.
