Crews continue to clean up in cold Calgary after significant snowfall

The cleanup is still underway after Wednesday and Thursday’s big dump which saw parts of Calgary receive anywhere from 25 to to 40 centimetres of snow.

The deep snow has been cleared from the major roads around the city but they are slippery and drivers may have trouble telling where the lanes are. The curbs will also feel closer with all the snow piled on them.

A snow route parking ban will go into effect Saturday at 10 a.m.

Highway 1 is closed from Golden, British Columbia to the Alberta border because of a high risk of avalanche.

Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Jasper and Revelstoke National Parks along with Kananaskis all have a special avalanche warning expected to run through Monday.

Meteorologist Andrew Schultz said it is cold, in fact, an extreme cold alert is in place for regions to the north and east of Calgary.

“High pressure is a funny animal, when you’ve got high pressure in the summer that means sunshine and lots of warmth and in the winter that high can offer up just a wide open gate to let cold Arctic air in and that is the case for Central, North Central and Eastern sections (of Alberta),” he explained.

It will be sunny for the next couple days but there is a risk of flurries making their way back to Calgary on Sunday.
