“Making Some Noise” for mental health

Students inside SAIT were “Making Some Noise” at a spin class in hopes of raising awareness about mental health.

Monday night marked the 4th annual launch of the campaign, which saw some VIP guests like Calgary Stampeder Rob Cote, Calgary Hitmen Tristen Nielsen and former Calgary Flame and Respect in Sport founder, Sheldon Kennedy.

Kennedy has been the honorary chair of the “Make Some Noise” campaign for two years now.

“It’s basically Make Some Noise for mental health, how do we raise awareness, create a platform and some education around an issue that I think a lot of times people aren’t really confident in discussing and having a conversation about,” Kennedy told 660 NEWS.

Nielsen says mental health is a big part of their lives as students and hockey players with what they do on the ice.

“Just knowing some of my close friends and people who are close to me, or people who are close to my friends, have been affected by the stigma that mental health gives off,” he said. “It’s sad to see, and I just hope that I can help and events like this can help us get through it.”

Since its launch in Calgary, the campaign has spread to 17 other schools within the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

In 2016, the SAIT Trojans were honoured with the Lieutenant-Governor’s Circle on Mental Health and Addiction True Imagination award for their work.
