Travel: cave concerts and wagon rides close to home

Travelling is part of the holiday season for many families, but if you’re looking for fun in the snow instead of a sandy beach, you don’t have to venture far from Calgary.

Travel writer Jody Robbins says Banff-Lake Louise and Canmore really know how to do the festive season.

At the Banff Springs Hotel, Jody says they’ve set up a Santa Suite.

“This is a tricked-out festive space in the Oak Room. It begins on December 16. Santa will make appearances on the weekend afternoon, but anyone can visit. It’s the perfect place to take your holiday pictures.”

The hotel is also putting on A Christmas Carol, while in Canmore, they’ve cooked up a unique holiday experience; a concert in a cave.

“This runs December 15,16 and 17. It’s called Spirit in the Mountain and it’s put on by Canmore Cave Tours. It takes place inside Rat’s Nest Cave, a wild, natural cave inside Grotto Mountain. It’s just a very special, otherworldly music experience.”

For those who a slower pace, Jody has just the thing.

“On Sunday afternoon, until December 17, Banff Trail Riders are offering free holiday wagon rides. These take place from the Whyte Museum.”

Also, the Banff Gondola is 25 per cent off for Alberta residents until December 20, and they even have a 12 Animals of Christmas tre asure hunt.
