Calgary-Lougheed byelection drawing lots of attention

A Calgary political scientist says former federal Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s name and political pedigree have drawn a lot of attention to what would normally have been a run-of-the-mill Alberta byelection.

Kenney, who’s now the leader of the recently merged United Conservative Party, is seeking his first seat in the Alberta legislature in Thursday’s byelection in the Calgary Lougheed riding.

A total of seven candidates are vying for the seat, including Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan and Green leader Romy Tittel.

Dr. Philip van der Merwe is running for the NDP.

Lori Williams from Mount Royal University predicts Kenney will likely coast to an easy victory, but she says the other parties are using the attention the riding is getting to showcase their platforms.

Kenney, meantime, says he’s not taking anything for granted.

He says the last thing he wants is his supporters thinking he has a victory in the bag and then not turn out to vote.

The debate runs from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Breaside Community Hall.
