It’s a girl! Calgary Zoo names newest king penguin Cleopatra

The Calgary Zoo has named its newest king penguin.

The chick, born in August 2017, is named Cleopatra.

Zoo spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder said they name all these birds after royalty, and they had this name tucked away just in case it was a female.

It’s good news for the zoo’s breeding program.

“It’s really important to get the right animals in the breeding program to have that genetic diversity,” she said. “It’s very male-heavy in king penguins and so we were looking to have more females added to that population so having a girl was even better.”

Watch for Cleo when the penguin walk starts January 17. She has distinctive brown fur because of her young age.
