Conservatives hang on to Alberta stronghold

One for the Tories, one for the Liberals.

That’s how things worked out in two federal by-elections Monday night.

Conservative Dane Lloyd easily won the Sturgeon River–Parkland riding in the Edmonton area with more than 75 per cent of the vote.

The constituency is staunch Tory territory and had been held by interim leader and Harper cabinet minister Rona Ambrose.

The other by-election was held in the Quebec riding of Lac-St-Jean, where Liberal candidate Richard Hebert has won in what’s being called a stunning upset.

The riding, formerly held by former Conservative cabinet minister Denis Lebel, hasn’t gone Liberal since the 1980’s.
