Roughly 2,500 customers remain in the dark in east-central Alberta, where crews can’t access the power lines.
ATCO said a storm rolled into the region at about midnight, impacting its customers from Heisler to just south of Drumheller to the Saskatchewan border.
As many as 5,000 customers were initially impacted, but power has been restored to about half of them.
“The biggest barrier is that the roads are closed,” explained district manager of operations Allan Gano. “We’re having to allocate crews to where roads can be opened. In the Hanna area as an example, we’re having a lot of difficulty because the highways are closed and we can’t get our crews to where we believe we need to be.”
The company said this area has been hit the hardest and it’s called in extra workers to restore power.
