Heat warning for Calgary and surrounding areas

We were expecting it, but now it’s official.

The City of Calgary is now formally under a heat warning from Environment Canada.

The warning covers most of central and all of southern Alberta as meteorologists say a long period of maximum daily temperatures reaching 29 degrees or above is expected.

The forecast is calling for the heat to stay with us for at least into next week with some parts of the province, like Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, forecasted to reach 35 degrees by the weekend.

EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux tells 660 NEWS the best thing to do is to drink water.

“Number one thing is to begin your day well hydrated. Don’t make it a game of catch up, if you know you’re going to be headed out for recreation or work or anything else, start your day well hydrated but bring lots of fluids with you,” said Brideaux. “Just plain water is best, other things like juice and sports drinks and tea are fine as well, but mostly they may also contain other things like sugar.”

The forecast for Friday is calling for a high of 31, that means a big hat, maybe of the cowboy variety, sunscreen and shades will be needed for the several hundred thousand people attending the Stampede parade or heading to the grounds for the first day of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
