Building facade collapses, nearly hitting two people

Some people are counting their lucky stars Tuesday evening after the facade of an empty building in the Beltline fell on to the sidewalk.

The incident happened at a building in the 1200 block of 11 Avenue S.W.

Mark Bolger, who lives across the street, says it came close to striking two pedestrians.

“I just heard what sounded like a traffic accident, like a truck hitting something,” said Bolger.

He looked to see the fallen building front and two people standing 10 to 20 feet away, thankful they weren’t hit.

“It was funny, a bus stopped too and actually the guy came out and took photos of them because they came back and just missed being killed by this thing falling.”

Steve Fontaine, who works across the street, also heard the loud crash.

“My coworker and I heard this noise and we looked over and the whole front of the building had just collapsed right on to the ground,” said Fontaine.

“There was people walking on either side so (I’m) just really, really thankful that nobody got hurt and nobody was underneath this because they probably wouldn’t have survived that.”

The sidewalk was cordoned off, while the fire department cleared off the sidewalk.

The former owner of City Tile, next door, says the building has been vacant for sometime after it was sold to a developer.
