Travel Feature: Should you pack one bag or two?

The summer holidays are fast approaching.

It’s a time for family fun, but also stress if you’re travelling.

Calgary travel writer Jody Robbins said if you’re flying off to vacation, make sure you make the most of your carry-on bag.

“I always recommend people bring a full day of clothing wrapped up in a plastic bag,” she said. “That’s because if something you’re wearing gets soiled, you can safely put it away in that bag so it doesn’t damage anything else, and we all know luggage gets lost, so you want to have enough to carry you through at least 24 or 48 hours.”

Then to the question: Should I just take a carry-on, or do I chance checking a bag?

“I think when you’re travelling with kids, don’t stress about it. It’s okay to check a bag. There are certain credit cards you can get, I know WestJet has one, where your bags are checked for free.”

She recommended a couple items in either of your bags: all-purpose soap that can be used for the shower, dishes or laundry and dental floss.

“It’s something a never go without. Besides your teeth hygiene, it can into a makeshift clothesline, and if you don’t have a knife you can use it to cut desserts or cut cheese.”
