ASIRT rules police shooting of machete-wielding man as justified

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has ruled that an officer involved shooting last year was justified.

On September 17, Calgary Police responded to reports of a man involved in a fight at the Marlborough LRT station

Upon arrival, an officer noticed a man carrying what looked like a stick, and started chasing him.

They ended up inside a store at Marlborough Mall, where the officer deployed a taser, which had no effect on the suspect.

He then pulled out a machete and ran at the officer, who he struck repeatedly with the weapon, causing serious injuries.

The officer then shot the man three times.

ASIRT Executive Director, Susan Hughson, says after a careful review, they have determined the shooting was reasonable and necessary, and the officer likely saved his own life by firing.

The 24-year-old suspect is charged with numerous offences, and remains before the courts.
