Man flying above Airdrie causes flight disruptions at YYC

A man flying above Airdrie in a powered parachute caused problems at YYC Calgary International Airport.

The airport contacted Airdrie RCMP Monday night to report the parachute was in the middle of a flight path, resulting in a number of planes being re-routed for landing.

Constable Dan Martin said they worked with Calgary police to get the man down.

“Calgary HAWCS was also in the air pointing out where the parachute was,” he said. “I guess the operator of the powered parachute saw the helicopter and realized it was a police helicopter and decided to ground it.”

The man landed safely and was co-operative with police.

Transport Canada is part of the investigation and it’s not known if charges will be laid.
