Calgary mass killer feels the pain of relatives of victims; vows to not relapse

CALGARY – A Calgary man who killed five people with a knife is blaming the crimes on his mental illness and is trying to reassure the victim’s families that he is getting better.

Matthew de Grood was found not criminally responsible for stabbing five young people at a house party three years ago.

The Alberta Review Board is determining whether de Grood, who is housed in a secure hospital, should be granted more freedom.

In statement read by his lawyer, de Grood says he feels the pain of the families and knows they miss their loved ones.

De Grood says he was seriously ill with schizophrenia and says he never hurt anyone before he became ill.

His lawyer, Allan Fay, read the statement as relatives of the families looked on.
