Unlicensed dental operation shut down due to unsanitary conditions

The province is ordering an unlicensed dental operation at a Calgary home to shut down.

Anyone who received dental services at 20 Somervale Close S.W., or from Natalia Prohkin of that address, should be tested for viruses that can be spread through unsanitary dental procedures.

Medical Officer of Health for the Calgary Zone, Dr. Judy MacDonald, said this unlicensed, home-based dental operation did not have proper sterilization or sanitation processes in place, meaning patients may have been exposed to hepatitis B and C, and HIV.

“To prevent the spread of infection from one person to another, equipment used in dental procedures must be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized according to health standards,” she said.

Anyone who received dental care at the home should call Health Link at 811 to arrange for confidential blood tests. This testing, some of which may take place over a period of time, will determine whether an individual has been infected.

This unlicensed dental operation will remain under closure order unless significant changes can be made.
