Calgary examines mobile transit ticketing system

Calgarians could be using their smart phones to pay for transit passes in the near future.

City staffers are recommending a mobile ticketing system be brought to Calgary at Wednesday’s Transportation Committee meeting.

Councillor Shane Keating tells CityNews, it’s a great idea.

“The reality is if we don’t get to a mobile ticketing venue, I think we’re doing a disservice,” he said.

A report going before the committee says a mobile system with validator scanners can be in place within a year at a cost of about $5.5-million.

The city would also need to spend an estimated $2.4-million annually to operate and maintain the system.
