Calgary man flees gunfire at Mexico nightclub

A Calgarian who was at the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico is describing what he saw.

Five people were killed early Monday morning in a shooting. Foreign Affairs is confirming at least one of the dead is Canadian, and they’re investigating reports of another being killed.

Aleksandar Samardzija of Calgary was in the bottle service area of the club, not far from the exit, when he heard shots coming from outside.

“I saw several people get hit,” he said. “When we were coming out, the bouncer was definitely dead on the floor that worked right by the gate. I saw a bunch of other people that were wounded. I don’t know if they were deceased. We saw one guy who got shot, and he just went down to the ground and crawled over to a tree.”

He says security personnel were trying to get people out, when there was more gunfire outside.

Samardzija says he and his group of 15 or so friends hid behind a sofa and then ran out a side entrance to get away.

He was in Playa Del Carmen for the full 10 days of the BPM Music Festival.
