Men charged in murder of Lorenzo Bearspaw make court appearances

Two men have now been charged with first-degree murder, in a case that includes an ASIRT investigation due to an officer-involved shooting in the case.

Deangelo Powderface and John Stephens made their first court appearances Tuesday in Cochrane, in connection to the death of 27-year-old Lorenzo ‘Billy’ Bearspaw on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

They will be back in court on January 21st.

On January 6th, Bearspaw’s body was found on the nation and three suspects were identified, including 22-year-old Powderface and 29-year-old Stephens, as well as 27-year-old Ralph Stephens.

The next day, police went to a residence to serve warrants and while John Stephens was arrested without incident, Ralph Stephens engaged with police, shots were fired, and he died in hospital.
