Calgary police using checkstops to make sure people get home safely

Holiday revellers are being reminded if you have a few drinks, don’t drive!
That message from the Calgary Police who are out in full force with their checkstop campaign looking to keep roads safe.
In just one hour on Friday night, three people ended up losing their vehicles and were given their walking papers: two for alcohol, one for drugs.

Dominic, who just got his learner’s permit, had his first experience of going through a checkstop.
“It was pretty calm. The guy was really nice actually, complimented me and my Dad, he was actually pretty nice,” said Dominic.
His Dad, Jeff, was in the passenger seat.
He says it’s not just his son he worries about.
“There are still quite a few young kids that are drinking and driving and it’s a scary thing. But I have confidence in Dom, that he will make the right decision.”
Officers like Sergeant Joerg Gottschling who stops each vehicle looking for sign of impairment says the goal is to make sure everyone gets home safely.
“Calgary’s had no shortage of horrible examples over the last number of years involving alcohol-related deaths. Every year we lose 20 to 30 people,” said Gottschling.
Enhanced checkstops will continue through the holidays.
