PC MLAs pledge to support NDP’s helmet bill

A passionate speech from a Progressive Conservative MLA in support a NDP bill which hits close to home.

Grande Prairie – Wapiti’s Wayne Drysdale stood up in the Legislature Wednesday afternoon to reveal he and his caucus will be supporting the government’s measure to enforce helmets on off road vehicles.

Drysdale’s own son died back in 2001 from a brain injury he endured while on an ATV.

His son was 21 at the time and wearing a helmet.

“I wish to thank the minister for bringing this bill forward. I must say that it looks fairly familiar, but I’m glad you brought it forward. I and my caucus, I know, will be supporting this bill wholeheartedly. I hope it passes through the House smoothly and quickly.”

“Unfortunately, Mr. Speaker, I have some experience with this, I lost my son at 21 because of a brain injury on an OHV. He did have on the best helmet money could buy, so this bill does not guarantee that every life will be saved. But I definitely understand what it’s about, and I support it all the way and hope all the members in the House support it.”
