Country singer Brad Saunders and guitar player Joel Fraser go homeless for the homeless

It’s a tough gig but they’re doing it to raise funds and awareness about the plight of Calgary’s homeless.

Country singer Brad Saunders and guitar player Joel Fraser are in the home stretch of their 72 hours of experiencing being homeless.

The goal is to raise $5,000 for the Calgary Homeless Foundation and they’re well on their way to reaching that goal.

The pair admitted to sleeping in a garbage alcove on the first night in Bridgeland in the hopes of keeping warm.

“It wasn’t glamorous at all, it was pretty comfy, we made the most out of it,” they told fans over a Facebook Live session on Wednesday.

They’ve been spending their time making lunches for those less fortunate and on Thursday night served dinner at the Drop-In Centre.

“We’re staying between the lines, it’s been pretty good,” said Saunders to his fans. “We’ve raised quite a bit of money, people keep donating and it’s incredible.”

The weather hasn’t exactly been favourable for them with the mercury dipping below or hovering near zero degrees.

“It’s definitely a challenge, we’re happy we’re doing it and we’re learning a lot.”

Saunders said he was inspired to do it after learning more about the issue.

“I’m definitely starting to see not everyone is homeless for those reasons (drugs and alcohol), I’m happy we’re doing this because we’re definitely getting a better understanding of the whole thing.”
