City airport officially named “YYC Calgary International”

The Calgary Airport Authority has officially unveiled the new name of one of Alberta’s busiest travel hubs.

The Calgary International Airport will now officially be called YYC Calgary International Airport.

CEO Garth Atkinson took members of the media on a tour of the terminal Thursday morning.

He said the federal government made the decision to rename the airport as it owns of all of Canada’s major airports.

‘YYC’ has been the official International Air Transport Association code throughout the airport’s history.

“We adopted YYC as our brand in 2008,” Atkinson said. “And the YYC Airport brand quickly grew to symbolize the city we serve, the businesses we support, and is now used in the everyday language of Calgarians.”

Originally named McCall Field, the terminal has been known as the Calgary International Airport since the 1960s.
