One man dead after weekend avalanche near Lake Louise

An early season avalanche has claimed the life of one victim.

Parks Canada says the avalanche was triggered Sunday on Mount Victoria near Lake Louise. The skier was part of a group of two that had set to ascend the mountain.

Officials say the victim and his skiing partner decided to turn back mid-way up because of strong winds and poor conditions; that’s when the victim became caught in an avalanche. The skier’s companion was able to make it to safety at Plain of Six Glaciers tea house to call for help.

Recovery crews tried to begin their operation Sunday, but it wasn’t possible due to strong winds. The recovery operation resumed at first light Monday morning and staff recovered the victim’s body.

Tim Haggarty with Parks Canada says the man was in his 20s and was from Golden, B.C.
