Police lay charges in two weekend officer-involved shootings

City police have laid charges in two separate incidents over the weekend where officers fired their weapons at suspects.

A gun was fired on Saturday afternoon, when police tried to stop a vehicle at the Blackfoot Truck Stop in the southeast. Then about an hour later, an officer chased a suspect who allegedly had a machete, through Marlborough Mall.

In the mall incident, 24-year-old Antonio Bautista faces counts of aggravated assault, assaulting a peace officer, possession of a dangerous weapon and other offenses related to probation and outstanding warrants. He was allegedly attacking people with the weapon when police were called to the northeast mall. An officer chased him down and the police member was severely injured by the machete before he shot the suspect.

In a separate case from earlier that day, an officer tried to stop 23-year-old Dakota Casey at the diner. He had a rifle in his vehicle and tried to flee when one officer shot at him.

Casey’s vehicle hit a gas meter and power pole before he was tasered by a second officer and arrested.

Casey is charged with assault of a peace officer, assault with a weapon, criminal hit and run and a number of other counts.

Alberta’s police watchdog, ASIRT, is investigating both incidents.
