Child trapped in hot car prompts RCMP reminder

A close call in Athabasca involving a mother and nine month old baby has prompted the RCMP to issue a warning about hot vehicles.

On Thursday, a woman was driving through town when she stopped at the river front to change her child.

She shut the door and didn’t realize she didn’t have the keys with her, locking the infant inside.

After a while the engine turned off forcing the RCMP to come up with a quick response.

They found a nearby dealership, which was able to produce a key, reuniting mother and child.

No one was hurt during the ordeal but Constable Ty Roddick-Ament says this should serve as a reminder to us all.

“We would certainly further that no child should be left unattended in a vehicle, it wasn’t the case this time and there was no intent to leave the child but even with the newer vehicles, if you step away from your car, even to walk around it, be comfortable that you know whether or not it’s locked and that you know how to get into it.”
Roddick-Ament says at least have a set of keys in your pocket.

He adds it’s concerning during those weather extremes be it very hot or very cold.

“The power of the sun to generate heat seems to be magnified by the glass in the vehicle and it’s much like when you get into your vehicle in a parking lot after it sat in the sun for an extended period, you know hot it is inside, now imagine being kept inside that environment.”

Mounties the point of releasing this is they want to make sure no child is left in a car for extended periods of time.
