We ‘goat’ this! City explores using Billy and friends to control weeds

The city is exploring the idea of using goats to clean up city grass and keep it free of weeds.
“We know that grazing has the potential to offer several benefits for managing landscapes in Calgary,” Chris Manderson, Urban Conservation lead for Calgary Parks said. “Targeted grazing for weeds is environmentally friendly and sustainable, and there’s evidence from other cities that indicates that it can also be cost-effective.”
The pilot project will see how effective the method of grazing is on controlling weeds.
Expect to see the goats in Confluence Park (West Nose Creek) and maybe even a second location in a nearby green space.
It’s expected the animals will come just as the Canada thistle begins to flower, which apparently is an effective time for controlling this particular weed.
The timeline is scheduled for late May or early June, weather permitting.
