Society makes it hard for sex workers to leave the industry: researcher

BURNABY – New research from Simon Fraser University has found that name-calling and violence tends to follow sex workers who exit the industry.

Study author Raven Bowen says many sex workers concealed their former occupation, fearing that discovery would lead to loss of family relationships and new jobs.

She gave the example of a 61-year-old woman who lost her job when she says a police officer informed a colleague the woman had formerly been a sex-trade worker and a drug addict.

The study gathered stories from 22 Vancouver sex workers who were either no longer working the trade or leading dual lives by holding two jobs.
