Balzac Billy announces early end to winter for Calgarians

It’s looking like an early end to winter for Calgarians if the region’s furry, six-foot prairie prognosticator proves to be right.

Balzac Billy didn’t see his shadow Tuesday morning, as part of Groundhog’s Day festivities, which means an early spring.

Billy didn’t hesitate, he popped out of his burrow and looked around.

“I thought it was pretty good, we’re not going to have winter much longer but mind you it hasn’t been that bad,” said Warren.

He, like many in the crowd, knew the “massive squirrel” would predict good news and is looking forward to the sunshine that comes with spring.

“I’m happy about it, I’m glad that we’re going to have an early spring, that’s wonderful news isn’t it?” said another woman.

Food was served and there was live entertainment for all those who braved the early morning, cool hours.

Billy’s forecast falls in line with Nova Scotia’s own Shubenacadie Sam whose also calling for an early spring while Wiarton Willie in Ontario thinks there will be six more weeks of winter.

Celebrations were cancelled in Manitoba where Winnipeg Willow died last Friday at the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
