Stats Canada says Calgarians confident in police force

New numbers from Statistics Canada show a good number of Calgarians still back the blue.

When asked about the city’s police service, 75 per cent found officers approachable and easy to talk to, 75 per cent found they ensure the safey of citizens and 76 per cent believed they responded promptly to calls.

The survey also found Calgary and Toronto have more confidence in its general institutions.

“It’s not a surprise because the police commission does a yearly survey that puts us very high,” says Calgary Police Association Vice-President Mike Lomore, who adds it’s great to see.

Lomore says he was caught off guard on why they performed so low in providing information on ways to prevent crime. He never thought this would be their lowest category at 64 per cent.

RCMP had slightly lower numbers. Insp. Gibson Glavin says Mounties do a great job in keeping people safe.

“But what I think that we don’t do a great job on is necessarily making sure the public feels safe,” he says.

RCMP is now working to correct that.
