A special flag marking one of the city’s oldest cultural groups and an important piece of our history will fly outside City Hall Friday.
The Franco-Alberta flag has been raised to mark Franco-Alberta Day.
Ward 8 Councillor Evan Woolley represents Cliff-Bungalow-Mission, which at one point was known as Rouleauville.
“Franco-Alberta culture is a very key piece of our identity, not only as a province but even within the city. French Canadians played a very significant role in the city,” he said. “It’s an important part that we recognize all the important cultures in this city that we live in.”
The city of Calgary has flown the flag every year to mark its cultural identity.
The flag was created in 1982 as part of a contest that was sponsored by the Francophone Youth of Alberta.
