Local political scientist calls West Edmonton Mall threat a cry for attention

A political scientist from the University of Calgary says a recent threat on West Edmonton Mall is simply an attempt to create anxiety.

Michael Zekulin says the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist group that called for the attack is competing with other groups like ISIS and wants to get its name back out there.

Zekulin tells City News, it’s likely just a “fishing expedition”.

“We know that these groups are increasingly reaching into Western democratic states and this is all groups, we’re aware that Al Shabaab for example several years ago were fairly successful in recruiting, there was a bunch out of the Minnesota St. Paul area, Edmonton does have a very large Somali Canadian community,” he explained.

Zekulin says there are a lot of unknowns but there’s no reason to suggest an attack is imminent, or that this is anything beyond Al Shabaab trying to find sympathizers.
